Technology

Every as-built drawing we deliver in Los Angeles is built on a foundation of professional-grade technology — from the moment our team arrives on site with laser measurement equipment to the moment your permit-ready CAD files land in your inbox. We invest in the right tools so that every dimension we capture is accurate, every file we deliver is clean, and every drawing set meets the standards required by Permit and local building departments across LA County.

Frequently Asked Questions — As Built Drawing Technology

Everything you need to know about getting accurate as-built drawings for your project. Still have questions?

What technology do you use to measure buildings for as-built drawings in Los Angeles?

We use two primary measurement technologies depending on the size and complexity of the project. For most residential and mid-size commercial buildings throughout Los Angeles County, we use professional laser distance meters that capture dimensions to within 1/16 of an inch. For larger or more complex buildings — warehouses, multi-story commercial structures, historic properties — we deploy 3D laser scanning equipment that captures millions of data points per second, producing a complete point cloud of the existing building geometry.

Traditional laser measurement uses a handheld laser distance meter to capture individual dimensions room by room — it is fast, accurate, and the right tool for most residential and standard commercial projects. 3D laser scanning uses a rotating scanner that captures the complete geometry of a space in a single setup, producing a dense point cloud with sub-millimeter accuracy across the entire building simultaneously. Scanning is faster and more accurate for large or complex buildings but is generally not necessary for standard residential as-built projects. We assess each project and recommend the right approach before the site visit.

We produce as-built drawings primarily in AutoCAD 2024 and Revit Architecture — the two industry-standard platforms for construction documentation in Los Angeles. We also work in BricsCAD for clients who require it. Every file is delivered with clean layer structure and standard architectural conventions, ready to use in your design workflow without additional cleanup or reformatting.

Yes. We deliver full Revit BIM models built directly from field measurements — not converted from AutoCAD. Our Revit as-built models are available from LOD 200 schematic base models to LOD 350 detailed coordination models depending on your project requirements. Revit delivery is available for residential, commercial, and industrial projects throughout Los Angeles County and Orange County.

We deliver in AutoCAD .dwg, Revit .rvt, PDF, and DXF. IFC format is available on request for projects requiring open BIM coordination. We deliver in the format your team needs — there is no upcharge for format and no extra steps to convert files. If you need multiple formats, we provide all of them in the same delivery.

For most single-family homes and standard residential projects throughout LA County, traditional laser measurement is faster and more cost-effective than 3D scanning and equally accurate for the level of detail required by LADBS permit applications. We deploy 3D scanning for residential projects that have complex geometry, very tight timelines, or require a Revit model with high geometric accuracy. Contact us with your project details and we will recommend the right approach.
